Solution to CRITICAL_SERVICE_FAILED blue screen error in Windows 11

This error can mainly occur due to a lack of driver or that the system is damaged. It may also have to do with incompatibility issues with a recently installed hardware and driver. Damaged system files is another factor that can impact this CRITICAL_SERVICE_FAILED blue screen error in Windows.

As we cannot access the desktop, it will be essential to start Windows in safe mode from the advanced startup options screen.

Disable enforcement of driver signature

  • The first thing we will do is start the PC and when Windows finishes loading, we turn it off instantly. We will repeat this process until a message that says “Preparing automatic repair” appears on the screen.
  • Now we are going to have to go to the options menu that appears, we will click on the “Troubleshoot” option.
  • On the next screen, we will touch “Advanced Options” and then we will click on “Startup Settings”.
  • Next, we will have to click on the “Restart” button.
  • We are going to see a screen with several numbers. We will activate the option “Deactivate the application of the driver signature”, we do this by pressing the 7 or F7 key on the keyboard. The PC will restart with the signature application disabled.

Run SFC scan offline

The error may be due to corrupted system files. So running a System File Checker (SFC) scan can help us fix it.

  • We will turn on the PC and turn it off when Windows loads. What will cause us to see a Preparing Automatic Repair screen, we will do until we see it.
  • Next, we click on “Troubleshoot” and choose “Advanced Options.”
  • Now we will have to choose “Command Prompt”.
  • On the next screen we will enter the user account.
  • Then, we click on the Continue button to open Command Prompt.
  • Now in order to run the SFC scan offline, we will enter the following command: sfc / scannow / offbootdir = C: / offwindir = C: Windows
  • We will have to let it run completely and then restart the PC as we normally would.

Rebuild BCD and MBR

BCD is the acronym for Boot Configuration Data, it is responsible for storing the boot configuration parameters to start Windows. If the configuration file is damaged or corrupted, it will cause the error. So we can rebuild BCD to fix it.

The first thing we will do is start the advanced recovery mode and command prompt as we did in the previous step. Once in the CMD, we are going to enter the command bootrec / rebuildbcd and then we choose the operating system to add to BCD.

Another important thing would be to try to rebuild the Master Boot Record (MBR) if the MBR is damaged, then it generates the CRITICAL SERVICE FAILED BSoD error. We will have to launch command prompt from advanced startup options, like the previous step, and enter the following commands, one by one (don’t enter them all together).

  • bootrec / RebuildBcd
  • bootrec / fixMbr
  • bootrec / fixboot

Once these commands are finished executing, we will simply have to restart the PC and check that the problem has been solved.
