How to change the timeout to turn off the screen in Windows 10/11?

  • If we leave the house or are busy, there is no point in having the Windows screen remain on, consuming energy while nobody pays attention to what is seen on the monitor
  • Not all users are comfortable with the same waiting time to turn off the screen
  • Fortunately, Microsoft allows us to configure this section in Windows 10 and Windows 11

As we well know, Microsoft’s operating system comes with some useful power saving options. But these not only influence the electricity bill at the end of each period, but also affect our interaction with the equipment. Therefore, if you are looking to further customize the experience on your PC, in this article you will learn how to change the wait time to turn off the screen in Windows 10 and Windows 11, being able to manage as you prefer how many minutes must pass before the monitor stops showing content.

Of course, we must bear in mind that we are talking about cases in which there are tasks that continue to execute in the background, even when we have stopped seeing their action on the computer screen.

Namely, the idea is that the computer continues to work but, since we are not in front of the screen, it does so without consuming energy unnecessarily keeping the monitor on. In fact, it is a basic trick to spend less money, so you should take it into account if you want to reduce your expenses.

That said, let’s see what configuration alternatives both Windows 10 and Windows 11 offer us.

Change the timeout to turn off the screen in Windows

Needless to say, screen off is especially handy on laptops that rely on their own battery to run. In those cases, we can set different configurations, such as specific timeouts for when it works only on battery and for when it works plugged in.

From the Settings app

  • Open Settings in Windows 10 or Windows 11, and go to System, Power & Battery
  • In Windows 10 go to Power and sleep; and in Windows 11 to Power and battery
  • In the Screen drop-down menu, set a time that you think is suitable

Once this is done, your desktop or laptop PC will turn off only after the indicated time has elapsed.

From the Control Panel

This second method has an advantage over the previous one, and that is that it allows us to create several personalized plans. We can even name each of the planswhich is very practical on a day-to-day basis.

  • Press the Win + R keys to open the Run command box
  • Type Control Panel and click OK to open it
  • Go to Hardware and Sound, Power Options
  • There, click Change plan settings or the Choose when to turn off the screen link
  • Click the drop-down menus next to the Turn off screen option to determine the time to turn off

Set shutdown plans for when your laptop is running on battery power or plugged in.

From the Command Prompt

Another way to modify the timeout to turn off the screen in Windows is from the Command Prompt. This mechanism has an advantage, and that is that we can customize the waiting time 100%, establishing measurements such as 7 minutes, 12 minutes, or whatever we preferto respond to our TOCs.

To customize the timeout to turn off the screen when running without battery to 100%, do this:

  • Click on Windows Search and type cmd. Select Command Prompt and open it
  • Copy the following command
powercfg -change -monitor-timeout-dc X
  • Paste it into Command Prompt, pressing Enter
  • Replace the X with the number of minutes to wait

To customize the timeout to turn off the screen when plugged in to 100%, do this:

  • Click on Windows Search and type cmd. Select Command Prompt and open it
  • Copy the following command
powercfg -change -monitor-timeout-ac X
  • Paste it into Command Prompt, pressing Enter
  • Replace the X with the number of minutes to wait

It’s that easy to make your PC completely adapt to the waiting time you want.

How to make my screen not turn off in Windows 11?

If for something specific you don’t want the screen to ever turn off, in Windows 11 you can determine it like this:

  • Open Windows 11 Settings and go to System, Power & Battery
  • Click on the Display and sleep tab, to expand the section
  • From the dropdown menus, select Never for these features
  • Indicate that you prefer to be configured indistinctly for when you work with battery or plugged in

In this way, your energy consumption may be a little higher and the battery of the laptop may drain a little faster. But you will have the screen always visible, and you can undo the customization whenever you want,
