Choosing a domain for your website is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. This is because all good domain names are taken and used by someone else.
So finding a domain name that is readily available and easy to remember will be one of the many challenges in running an online website.
Before trying to find a domain name that sounds good and is easy to remember, use these bullets to help you:
- Easy to say and spell. Successful websites have domain names that are easy to remember. If you can find something that is easy to remember and short, and is also available, record it.
- Use .com, .org or .net. domain extension. If you are building an online business, you will probably want to go with .com extension. You want people to be able to remember you, after all. .org, .net they are also good alternatives.
For the sake of time, we’ll use a example.com.
The sample domain name is for testing purposes only and cannot be used or registered by anyone.
If you think you’ve found a perfect domain name, head over to Google Domains to check if it’s available.
For this post, we will use Google domains as our domain registrar. You will have to register a domain to make it yours. There are many domain registrars, but for time reasons, let’s go with Google domains.
On the Google domain page, in the search box, type your domain name and click get it button. If the domain is available, Google will allow you to register it.
If a domain name is not available for registration, Google will present you with a message that the the domain is already registered and provides you with optional domain extensions with the same name.
You may be able to use .net, .org, etc. instead.
Sometimes you just have to keep trying until you find the correct name that is available, and then you can sign up.
With the domain available, you can add it to the cart to buy it.
Go to the shopping cart and start buying the domain by completing the payment form. Domain names registered by Google typically cost $ 12 a year.
If Google Domains is going to be your domain registrar, then it makes sense to have a Gmail account. If you already have one, just log in and complete the domain name payment.
After paying for the domain name, you will now own that domain name. Google is your domain registrar and you can manage it from the Google Domains website.
Once you log in, you will see the name of your domain that you have registered. Click on the domain name to manage it.
On the domain overview page, you will find details of your domain, including expiration date, privacy protection status, and more.
That is all for now. You have registered a domain that you can use online.
In our next post, we will register with a Google Cloud server in order to host the content of our website that we will create.
Until then, stay tuned.
