How to enable or disable metered connection in Windows 11

This post shows students and new users the steps to enable or disable Metered Connection in Windows 11 for Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Cellular connections. A metered network connection will attempt to control and reduce data usage on the network. For mobile connections, metered data is automatically enabled by default.

You can manually configure Wi-Fi and Ethernet network connections as measured if you want to reduce the amount of data used by applications and services on that network. However, if metering is configured on your networks, some updates for Windows will not install automatically, which can introduce security risks and vulnerabilities.

If you have limited data-capped internet access, the metered connection on your networks can help reduce application usage or exceed your data usage limits. If you configure a network connection as an unmetered connection, you may exceed your data limit for that network and incur additional charges.

To start setting up a metered network connection in Windows 11, follow the steps below.

How to enable metered connection in Windows 11

First go to the Windows Settings app.

Windows 11 has a centralized location for most of its settings. From system settings to creating new users and updating Windows, everything can be done from your System settings crystal.

To access the System Settings, you can use the Windows key + i shortcut or click Start ==> Settings as shown in the following picture:

Alternatively, you can use the search box on the taskbar and find Settings. Then select to open it.

The Windows settings panel should look similar to the image below. In Windows settings, click Network and Internet, then select Wi-Fi or Ethernet on the right panel of the screen shown in the image below.

  • For Wifi connection, select the Wi-Fi network you are connected to, then turn on Measured connection.
  • For Ethernet connection, select Ethernet network you are connected to, then turn on Measured connection.
  • For Mobile connection, select Mobile, then turn on Measured connection.

For each of the network connections, move the button to the Upon position to enable the metered connection for that specific network.

Once you turn it on, the data on that network should shrink and be limited. Some applications may function differently on a metered connection to help reduce data usage.

If you change your mind about the measured connection, you can simply reverse the steps above to deactivate it.

For each network, go to Windows Settings ==> Network and Internet ==> Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Cellular and toggle the to the off position to disable.

You should do that!
