How to fix Error finding Steam in Windows 10 and 11

There are several players who cannot enjoy their favorite games from the Steam client. When they try to open a game, they get the error message that says “Failed to find Steam” or what would be in English “Failed to find Steam” in Windows 10 and also happens in Windows 11. This makes it impossible to play because when we click OK, the game automatically closes. So, in this article, we are going to see all the ways in which we can solve this problem.

Fix Error finding Steam on Windows

Restart Steam

The first thing we have to try is the simplest possible solution. This would be, basically, closing Steam completely and starting it again, you could say that we would be restarting it. But for this we are going to have to do it from the Task Manager.

  • We close Steam as we normally would. Then we go to the system tray at the bottom right, right click the Steam button and choose Exit.
  • We right click on the Start button, start the Task Manager and go to the Processes tab.
  • Now we are going to have to right click on all the processes related to Steam and we will choose End task.

Wait a few seconds and open Steam to see if the issue persists.

Run Steam as administrator

First we are going to try closing Steam completely, as we mentioned in the previous point. Then we are going to right click and choose Run as administrator. If the game works without problem, we are going to configure it so that it always opens as administrator.

We right click on the Steam icon and choose Properties. Then we go to the Compatibility tab and check the Always run as administrator box.

Copy the Steam.dll file to the game folder so i can find steam

When we see the message “Failed to find Steam” it is evident that the game cannot find Steam on our system. This kind of problem can be fixed by copying the Steam.dll file to the game folder. To do this we will have to go to the following location: C:Program Files (x86)Steam

This path is the default location where Steam is installed. If we have installed Steam in another location, we will have to look for it where we installed it. We look for the Steam.dll file in the folder, copy it and paste it into the folder where we have the game found in Steamapps.

Disconnect and restart Steam in online mode

This trick worked for many users. The idea is to disconnect from Steam and restart it in online mode.

  • We open Steam.
  • We go to Steam> Disconnect.
  • We will click on Enter offline mode in the confirmation window.
  • We exit Steam and close it completely.
  • Now we open the program again. Now Steam is going to ask us to connect or start it in offline mode. We will select Go Online.

When we start the game, we will have to check if the error still appears.
