How to force close an app in Windows

We are using our PC normally when suddenly it is not responding. What can we do? In these cases it is best force close an app in windows, even several. It is one of the things that we need to try before we jump to pressing the power button to restart the PC.

We all want everything to work well all the time. But sometimes this is not the case. Suddenly the Windows application starts working slower than normal; the terrible window “This program does not work” appears; the computer freezes; Lots of things can happen.

In these cases, the best option is to force the application to close. This is something we recommend doing before you have to restart your computer. Perhaps we have more programs open and losing all the work in progress is not recommended.

Force close an app in Windows

For example, if we press Alt + F4 (maybe also Fn, depending on whether we are on a desktop or laptop). It will close any application that we currently have selected.

Another thing we can do to force close an app is to press Windows + X and choose Task Manager. Alternatively, we can press Ctrl + Alt + Del and choose Task Manager. The next thing will be to search for the application that is causing problems, we will right-click it and select End Task.

The third option is to press Windows + R to be able to open the Command Prompt window. we will write cmd and press Enter in the Run window. Once the command prompt is open, we type task list to see all the applications and then we type taskkill /im ProgramName.exe /t /f and press Enter.

Obviously, in this last step, where it says “program name” we are going to have to add the name of the executable of the application that we want to close.

Basically, that would be it, there are three pretty good methods to be able to force close any kind of application in Windows. Obviously, in case none of these methods work, the only remedy left will be to restart the computer.

Although it’s always nice to have an alternative and not have to go through a reboot, especially when we have work that we haven’t saved. No one wants to lose hours of work because an app is rogue, right?
