How to play The Legend of Zelda games?

  • With so much time and so many updates, playing The Legend of Zelda games is not an easy thing.
  • We review which are the most recognized within the saga and how to execute them today

With The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on the horizon, you may want to enjoy this story again. We talk about the saga that has been present on all Nintendo consoles for the last 40 years, re-released on virtual consoles and with more than one updated installment, so if you consider yourself a fan of the franchise, you will probably be eager to know how to play all the games of Legend of Zelda.

The fact is that it is not easy to find all these titles nowadays and, therefore, we want you to join us in this journey to the past, in which we are going to show you how to access all these games, from the original game from 1986 until the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, focusing specifically around those that remained in the memory, omitting only a few machines and proposals.

Before we get into the details, let us say that if you have a Nintendo Switch, you can play up to 10 of the 15 games available in the main story; while if you add a Wii U and a 3DS you will have almost all of them. Of course, with physical versions you forget about the problem, but here we want to focus on the digital versions.

Some preliminary clarifications…

We are not going to consider spin offs and other products that frankly nobody remembers, but only the 15 games endorsed within this story, without leaving the aforementioned consoles either: Switch, Wii U and 3DS.

It should be noted, on the other hand, that at the Nintendo Direct event on February 8, Nintendo reported that it would soon add Game Boy and Game Boy Advance to its Nintendo Switch Online and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. These services will launch with The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX for Game Boy and simultaneously with The Legend of Zelda: The Minnish Cap for Game Boy Advance.which will expand the available universes.

We are not going to include any old consoles that you have, or that you can buy on eBay with physical type games. Involving things like HDMI converters goes a bit further than what we really wanted to do.. Also left out are the NES and SNES Classic Edition consoles, not included in the Nintendo store.

But the biggest clarification in this regard is that the Wii U and DS eShops are closing soon, and that the only way to get hold of these games is to acquire them by linking an old wallet of these with one from Nintendo. At the moment, most Wii U and 3DS games have been removed from Nintendo’s online store.

When Virtual Consoles shut down on March 27, only games purchased from the eShop will survive.
