Excessive temperatures can be harmful to the computer and can lead to malfunctions and, consequently, data loss. We’ve put together a few tips to help protect your PC from severe overheating.
1. Temperature control
Monitor your processor temperature. Each of them has its own – for example, most modern Intel processors can work stably at 100 ° C. But if your machine suddenly has a noticeable decrease in performance, most likely, you are faced with a throttling mode: it protects the processor from overheating by reducing the clock frequency. Most often, overheating is caused by cooling problems: old thermal grease, cooler breakdowns.
Monitoring CPU temperature is comfortable with tools like HWMonitor. If throttling often makes itself felt, figure out the reasons or lower the processor clock speed at first. The AMD Overdrive and Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, which can be downloaded for free, is suitable.
2. Sun protection
Protect your computer from the sun: Your PC should not be exposed to direct sunlight. Therefore, please do not place the computer near a window through which the sun will shine on it during the day.
3. Cooler cleaning
To keep the computer from overheating, you should regularly check how the coolers work and clean them if necessary. It is especially important to clean the inside of your PC in warm weather. We described in detail how to do this in a separate article.
4. Correct installation.
The cooler should not be covered by anything outside so that air can circulate freely – therefore, do not place the computer directly next to a wall. Also, do not put anything on the lid: some computers have unique ventilation holes in the lid – so do not cover them with anything that could interfere with air circulation.
5. Regular breaks
To protect your computer from overheating, let it rest periodically. If the PC runs from morning to evening, the risk of overheating is much higher than if the device is used only intermittently.
