This post shows students and new users the steps to run an application as an administrator in Windows 11. By default, when you open or run an application from your desktop, it will open with standard permissions.
In standard mode, the applications will work as designed and allow any or most users to run them smoothly. Some applications are created and designed to be run only by the administrator. Even a user who is a member of the administrators group will not run it unless the applications are running in administrator mode.
There are several ways to run an application with administrative rights. You can run it from the command prompt or right-click the application and select Execute as an administrator. Regardless of the methods you use, the application will open with administrator permissions.
You will always have to do this to run the application as an administrator. However, Windows has a feature that you can configure in applications to always run in administrator mode without the usual methods above, and the steps will show you how to do it below.
How to open an application as administrator in Windows 11
As mentioned above, most, if not all, apps open in standard mode with standard permissions by default. If you have an application that must be opened with administrative privileges, please follow the steps below to do so.
In Windows, to open an application as an administrator, simply right-click the application icon, then select Execute as an administrator As shown below.
Applications on the Start menu follow the same process. Right click on its icon and select Execute as an administrator.
How to always run an application as administrator in Windows 11
Windows allows you to configure an application to always run as administrator without right-clicking or using the above methods. First, you will need to locate the executable file of the application that you want to always open with elevated privileges in File Explorer.
If the app has a desktop icon, just right-click its icon and select Properties in the context menu as shown below.
In the Properties panel, under Compatibility, select the highlighted box that says «Run this program as administrator«
Click on the okay to apply your changes.
The next time you run the application, it will run as administrator by default.
