Thanks to the native Translate app, your iPhone was already pretty good at translating words and phrases into different languages. However, translating words is even more convenient now thanks to the introduction of a new system-wide tool in iOS 15. Here’s how it works.

A new way to translate words

The official Translation app, released with iOS 14, was designed primarily for two people to communicate side-by-side with a mobile device with each other. With a tap of the microphone button, a person says something on the device in their primary language. From there, the app automatically translates the word or phrase into the other person’s language, and so on.

The application translates words in 11 different languages, such as French, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, English (United States and United Kingdom), German, Italy, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish.

See there is no app

In iOS 15, word translation on the iPhone no longer requires the Translation app, although it is still there to help people communicate. The new tool is system-wide and allows you to translate written words in any app. All you have to do is highlight the text.

This is how it works step by step:

  1. Press hard one word, phrase or paragraph in an application until the text is highlighted in blue. The same finger movement is used to copy / paste text on mobile devices.
  2. Please select Translate from the pop-up menu. If you don’t see the option, use the arrow to scroll.
  3. Press Download languages if you want to use the new offline translation tool. (See below).

After the languages are downloaded, you can change the source and target languages at any time. From there, you can perform other tasks on the translation page, including:

  • Copy Translation to use the text elsewhere using copy / paste.
  • Change language to select one of the other 10 languages in the package.
  • Add to favorites, which adds the words to the Translate application for future reference.
  • Finally, open in Translate to translate the text into the native Translate application.

Language packs

Like the previous Translate app, the new translation tool works by communicating with Apple’s servers for a real-time experience. However, if you don’t want to send words back and forth with Cupertino every time you translate, you can avoid this by downloading one or all of the available language packs.

Download additional languages

To download or delete other languages on your iPhone:

  1. Tap the app Settings on the home screen of your device.
  2. Scroll down and choose Translate.
  3. Please select Downloaded Languages.

  1. For download a new language, click the download icon to the right of a language in the languages available to download section.
  2. For delete a downloaded language, slide the language into the Available offline section and select Delete.

You can start using the translation tool on iPhone with iOS 15 and later. It is also available on iPadOS 15. Enjoy your day!
