With headphones or earphones, the left and right speakers also play different things in stereo mode. Windows also supports mono audio, that is, sounds, and everything is combined and played through both speakers. Mono audio combines the left and right audio channels into one.

If you have a headphone and want to listen in only one ear, you can turn on mono audio so that everything is mixed and played on both speakers. You will get better audio quality with mono audio using just one earphone or headphone.

How to enable mono audio in Windows 11

As mentioned above, Windows supports mono audio, combining the left and right channels into one. So if you just want to wear a headphone or leave music through one ear, enabling Mono audio should give you better quality.

Here’s how to do it.

Windows 11 has a centralized location for most of its settings. From system settings to creating new users and updating Windows, everything can be done from your System settings crystal.

To access the System Settings, you can use the Windows key + i shortcut or click Start ==> Settings as shown in the following picture:

Alternatively, you can use the search box on the taskbar and find Settings. Then select to open it.

The Windows settings panel should look similar to the image below. In Windows settings, click System and select Dream tile on the right panel of the screen shown in the image below.

In the Sound settings panel, select the Mono audio tile, and move the button to the About position.

Now you can close and exit the Settings app.

How to disable mono audio in Windows 11

If mono audio does not play well and the sound quality is no better than in stereo mode, just turn it off.

Here’s how to do it.

Reverse the above steps by going to Start menu ==> Settings ==> System ==> Sound, then select the Mono audio tile, and move the button to the Off position to disable.
