How to Wipe (Dry) Water Out of an iPhone

Has your iPhone accidentally been taking a bath? If so, it shouldn’t be the end of the world. All iPhones have some degree of water resistance since the introduction of the iPhone 7.

All iPhones should be able to survive spending up to 30 minutes in water at a depth of one meter, and the latest models are capable of surviving a 30-minute dive to depths of up to six meters. As long as you rescue your iPhone within 30 minutes, it shouldn’t suffer any lasting damage.

However, if your iPhone does get wet, you’ll need to make sure to expel the water before it can cause problems. Here’s how to get water out of an iPhone.

How to get water out of an iPhone charging port

One of the most common places for water to enter your iPhone is the charging port. After all, it is the largest opening on your iPhone.

Having water in a place where a charging cable is inserted is obviously not ideal. Charging your iPhone when the lightning port is wet can cause the lightning port pins to corrode or short, causing permanent damage. It may also damage the charging cable.

If your iPhone detects water in the charging port, a warning message will appear advising you not to charge the phone until the connector is dry. There is an emergency override option that will allow you to continue charging anyway, but we do not recommend that you do.

There are really only two ways to get the water out of the charging port: gravity and time. Hold the phone with the charging port facing down and give it a few fairly firm taps. This should help dislodge some of the water from the port. The only thing you can do then is let it dry. Put the iPhone in a well-ventilated and dry place. Don’t put it in a bowl of rice—small particles of rice could get into the iPhone and cause even more damage.

After an hour or so, try plugging the charging cable back in. If you continue to get the warning message, repeat the process until the warning message stops appearing. It may take up to 24 hours for the phone to dry completely.

How to get water out of an iPhone with Fix My Speakers

The other main place water can get into your iPhone is through the speakers. If you have your iPhone wet, the speakers can end up sounding muffled or crackling. This is a sign that you have water in the speakers.

The Apple Watch, which is meant to be worn in water, has a clever way of expelling water that gets into the speakers. It does this by playing a sound that vibrates the speakers, forcing the water out. This feature doesn’t exist on the iPhone, but the good news is that it’s possible to recreate the effect.

There are several ways to do this: the first is to use a dedicated website called Fix My Speakers.

This is what needs to be done:

  1. Access the website of Fix My Speakers in your iPhone’s browser.
  2. Turn up the volume on your iPhone to the maximum with the volume keys on the side of the device.
  3. Lay your iPhone flat or hold it with the lightning port facing down.
  4. Press the button with the wind and water emojis.
  5. Wait for the sounds to finish playing.

Try the speakers again and see if the sound quality improves. You can repeat the above steps if you think there is still water on the speakers.

How to Get Water Out of an iPhone Using an App

You can also use an app called Sonic App to expel water from your iPhone speakers. This app works a bit like Fix My Speakers, using the speaker itself to force the water out.

For it:

  1. Install the free app Sonic App on your iPhone and launch it.
  2. Lay your iPhone flat or slightly tilted with the lightning port on the bottom.
  3. Tap the water drop icon in the center of the screen to start the process.
  4. Let the app run for about 10 seconds and tap stop.

  5. Try the speakers again.

You can repeat the process as many times as you want until all the water is expelled from your speakers. Once you’re done, you can always download the app until the next time your iPhone gets wet.

How to set up a water ejection shortcut on iPhone

Do you keep getting your iPhone speakers wet? You can set up a shortcut on iPhone to quickly force the water out.

Is that how it works:

  1. In your iPhone’s browser, open the shortcuts page of Water Eject and click on Get direct access.
  2. Press add shortcut.
  3. Then click on the tab my shortcuts.
  4. Click on the shortcut Water Eject.
  5. Now click on Begin Water Ejection. The shortcut will set the volume for you, so you don’t have to worry about turning it up before the shortcut runs.
  6. Wait until you hear a ping: the shortcut has finished.

You may receive a notification that the shortcut does not have permission to access a Wikipedia page. You can dismiss this notification as the shortcut has already done its job. If your speaker still has water, repeat the process.
