Power issues with Raspberry Pi 4

Raspberry Pi 4 makes use of a power supply unit (PSU) that is different from previous models. Its power through the USB type C connector, it is preferable to use it from an official 5.1V 3A power supply. As with previous models, a charger for a mobile device, such as a phone or tablet, is not enough.

Raspberry Pi 4 requires the installation of the latest Raspberry Pi operating system. In reality, regardless of the preferred operating system, we are going to need a version that was released after June 2019.

OS compatible with older models will not work optimally with newer devices. If we use an outdated or unsupported operating system, it will result in the red light on the LED. Therefore, the operating system will not be able to start. Installing the latest OS version will fix all these issues.

The Raspberry Pi 4 has two HDMI outputs. One of these is the micro-HDMI ports, which are labeled HDMI0 and HDMI1. The vast majority of picture problems are caused by the HDMI cable being plugged into the wrong port. So we’ll have to make sure we’re using the left port, which would be HDMI0.

Check red and green LEDs

When we start the device, one or more LEDs are activated. Red indicates power (PWR), while green is the activity indicator (ACT). We will also find a trio of green LEDs that indicate the status of the Ethernet connection.

In the normal state, the PWR and ACT LEDs are activated. ACT may flash during SD card operation. Therefore, if we do not see the green light on the Raspberry Pi, then we will not have problems with the SD card.

On the other hand, the PWR flashes when the power drops below 4.6V. This means that when the red light is not on, the Raspberry Pi has no power.

If only the red PWR LED is active and not blinking, it means the unit is receiving power, but does not have readable boot instructions on the SD card (if any). ATC and PWR LEDs lit at the same time mean the same thing.

When booting from the SD card, the green ACT light on the Raspberry PI will flash abnormally. Although if it flashes in other ways they can indicate a problem:

  • 3 flashes: Start.elf not found.
  • 4 flashes: Start.elf can’t be started, this means it might be corrupted. Also the card is not inserted correctly or the card slot is not working properly.
  • 7 blinks: No kernel.img
  • 8 flashes: SDRAM is not recognized. In this case, the SDRAM may be damaged or unreadable.

In case any of this happens, then we recommend trying the SD card with another freshly installed operating system.
