This publication shows students and new users the steps to change the screen brightness in Windows 11. For some laptops and computers, Windows automatically adjusts the screen brightness based on the current lighting conditions. This automatic setting helps ensure your screen is readable wherever you go.
For more advanced PCs, there may also be an option for Windows to automatically adjust the screen brightness and contrast based on the content displayed on the built-in screen.
If you’re using an external monitor, these automatic brightness adjustments may not be as useful as all of them. If you are using an external monitor and want to adjust the brightness, you may need to use the buttons on the monitor itself.
In some cases, you may need to disable these automatic brightness settings and manually adjust the screen brightness to your liking in different environments.
Windows 11 comes with a brightness slider that appears in Quick Settings. You can also find the brightness slider in the Windows Settings app by clicking the Start menu button ==> Windows Settings > System > Monitorand then move the Change brightness slider to adjust brightness.

How to adjust screen brightness in Windows 11
As mentioned above, Windows allows lighting and content based on screen brightness to automatically display on the screen. If it is an external monitor, you may need to adjust the screen brightness using the buttons on the monitor.
If these automatic settings above don’t work well in your environment, you can turn them off and manually change the screen brightness in Windows 11.
The steps below show you how.
To adjust the screen brightness in Windows 11, select the Network (WiFi) on the right side of the taskbar, and then move the Brightness slider to adjust brightness.
First, click on the Quick settings on the taskbar, which is a hidden button located where you see the Wi-Fi, Speaker, and Battery icons in the right corner.
In the pop-up window, locate the brightness slider on the right side of the taskbar and then move the Brightness slider to adjust brightness.
The brightness slider can also be adjusted from the Windows Settings app. To do that, click on the Start button ==> Windows Settings ==> System ==> Display, below Brightness and color, move the Change brightness slider to adjust brightness.
