If you are creating something long in Microsoft Forms, be it a form, survey, or questionnaire, consider dividing it into sections. Sections allow you to turn your long form into smaller pieces and group related questions into their own areas.

Here we will see how to add sections in Microsoft Forms, as well as rearrange or delete them if necessary.

Advantages of Sections in Microsoft Forms

If you have a short form, survey, or math quiz, the sections may not be necessary. But you can use them regardless of the size of your form. These are some of the benefits of sections in Microsoft Forms.

  • Divide up the longest forms. This can make your respondents feel less overwhelmed.
  • Create subgroups of questions. This keeps similar questions or questions on a related topic together.
  • Add a logical branch. This allows you to direct respondents to other sections based on their responses.

As an example, let’s say you are creating a customer opinion survey. You could add sections for different types of comments, such as product-specific, customer service, and website intuition.

How to Add a Section in Microsoft Forms

To add a section to your form, scroll down to Add new where you would normally insert a question. Click the arrow More types of questions on the right and select Section.

Next, give your section a name and optionally a description.

You can then add questions to the section as you did in your initial form.

Each section is labeled with a number, and this is the order in which they will be shown to your respondents.

And each section is considered a new page of the form. Thus, after answering the questions in section 1, respondents click Next and go to section 2. The questions in the entire form are numbered sequentially, so the numbering does not reset in each section.

Duplicate a Section

You can create a copy of a section and make it a new one if you want. If the section already contains questions, this will duplicate the questions as well. You can then make the necessary modifications.

Click on More settings for section (three dots) at the top right of the section and select Duplicate section.

Move a Section

The good thing about sections in Microsoft Forms is that you can organize them in any order you want. So you can create your sections and add your questions, but decide the order of those sections later.

Click on More settings for section and select Move section.

When the window appears, click the up or down arrow to move the section. Click on “Done” when you finish.

You can then do the same with the rest of the sections that you want to move.

Delete a Section

Perhaps you created a section with questions that you no longer want, or you have a section with a single question that you prefer to move elsewhere.

Click on More settings for section and select Delete section. You can then choose to delete the section or the section and its questions.

  • If you just delete the section, any questions within it will automatically move to the previous section.
  • If you delete the section and its questions, they will both be removed from the form.

Note on sections

If you plan to use the Random questions in Settings, it will be disabled when you use sections. All questions that you add to sections will remain there unless you move them manually.

Although difficult to see in the screenshot above, the checkbox for random questions is not selectable.

Consider sections in your long Microsoft forms

With the benefits that sections add and how easy it is to manage them, consider using them for your longer Microsoft Forms.
